Abia Govt Launches Crackdown on Street Begging in Aba, Dozens Arrested

In a sweeping move aimed at curbing street begging and restoring order in the city, the Mayor of Aba South, Chief Hon. Uche Wogu, led the Harmonized Task Force on a major operation today. The operation targeted notorious hotspots around CKC, Bata, and Brass Junction, resulting in the arrest of several street beggars and destitute individuals.
During the operation, children found begging were taken to motherless babies’ homes for care and rehabilitation. Meanwhile, adults apprehended during the raid were handed over to law enforcement agencies for further investigation. Some of those arrested were reportedly in possession of stolen phones and illegal substances, including Indian hemp.
The Abia government’s swift action reflects its commitment to addressing issues of public safety and reducing street vices. Speaking on the development, Chief Hon. Uche Wogu emphasized that the exercise was necessary to create a safer and more organized city.
