IPOB Demands Immediate and Unconditional Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Ahead of Court Hearing

Aba Province Nigeria-BiafraLand.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, calls on the Nigerian Government to halt the ongoing ethnic persecution of their leader and release him unconditionally at the court hearing scheduled today, 24th September 2024.

IPOB emphasizes that the continued trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is an act of political and ethnic victimization, especially as the Court of Appeal has already discharged him from all charges. Despite this, the Nigerian Government persists in prosecuting him, defying both local and international legal standards.

The movement reminds the public and international bodies that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was unlawfully kidnapped and rendered from Kenya to Nigeria, a violation of international law. Even the Nigerian Supreme Court condemned this illegal rendition, though its judgment has been stalled by undue pressure from the executive arm of the government.

IPOB reiterates that their leader's detention is illegal and highlights that their cause for Biafra's self-determination aligns with international law, specifically the UN's guidelines on self-determination and the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has not committed any crimes recognized by Nigerian or international law, and this position was confirmed by the Nigerian Appeal Court, which dismissed all charges and ordered his release.

Despite Mazi Kanu’s deteriorating health, the Nigerian Government remains adamant in its refusal to release him. IPOB further accuses the government of manipulating events in the South East by sponsoring criminal activities to fabricate evidence against Kanu.

In light of the upcoming court session, IPOB supports the call for Justice Binta Nyako to recuse herself from the case, citing bias and government pressure related to her husband’s corruption case. IPOB also warns Igbo politicians collaborating with the federal government against sabotaging efforts for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release, cautioning them against actions that could escalate the already tense situation.

The organization stresses that the peaceful nature of their struggle for Biafra’s independence should not be mistaken for weakness, warning that continued persecution may lead to a severe crisis in Nigeria. IPOB will take all necessary actions to ensure the safety and freedom of their leader.

Signed,

Comrade Emma Powerful

Media and Publicity Secretary for IPOB
