Ogoja Province. Nigeria-BiafraLand
The push for the Biafran sovereignty by the Igbo ethnic group in the Eastern part of Nigeria is not something new. As a movement that was alive in Biafra region for decades, the battle has remained alive not only in the hearts of Biafra people but also in there mind. After more than three decades of previous attempts to secede and capture an independent Biafra, so much desire, hunger, and drive for self-actualization to revive Biafra state is still burning in the chests of millions of Igbos.
Biafra is a renewed ancient Kingdom which was brought back by late and eternal Igbo Leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. He was commander of the Biafra separatists, in Nigeria’s wrongly civil war in the 60s. When Biafrans pulled out from Nigeria in order to form an independent nation of BIAFRA. The war went on up to 1970 and by this time, Biafra lost over three and a half million people.
However, after being defeated the call for the creation of the Biafran state among the Igbo people has not faded. Call for the reestablishment of Biafra has ramp up in the recent years with the involvement of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The movement headed by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is asking for a referendum that will allow the Igbos to vote if they wish to continue being part of Nigeria or form the nation of Biafra.
One of the most attractive features of the Biafran dream is that the people of Biafra are one. The Igbo people, who have been scattered in different states in Nigeria and other countries, got united to look for a Biafran nation. This has made them become close relatives despite their differences in religious and political inclinations. Even though the Nigerian government tried to stop it, Biafran dream persist to provide hope for millions of Igbo people living in different parts of the world.
The Biafran dream is not just an aspiration for secession, but it is also a cry for the right that had been denied. The Igbos living within the geographic entity called Nigeria have been neglected and suffered discriminative treatments, hence the Biafran call. It can be seen that through the movement for Biafra, the Igbo people are struggling against oppression within Nigeria. Many young Igbos are taking to the streets and social media to voice their dissatisfaction with the Nigerian system and demand a brighter future for themselves and posterity.
The beauty of Biafra is not in its quest for independence but the capability and the tenacity of the Igbo men. These people, known as Igbo, had been suppressed, oppressed, and marginalized for many years, but they still have their visions of a better life. Thus, the Biafran dream is a powerful narrative of hope and human spirit in the time of the struggle.
Thus, the dream of Biafra as an independent state has been cherished by the Igbo people for decades and is still relevant for millions of people. The fight for the re-emergence of Biafra is not just borne out of the desire to have a state for the Igbo but it is a fight against injustice and for a better future. The determination, solidarity, and spirit of the Igbo in their struggle for Biafra are the core values of Biafra.
