Peter Obi Takes Legal Action Against President Tinubu’s Aide, Demands N5 Billion in Compensation

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has initiated legal proceedings against Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Communication and Strategy, for making defamatory statements linking Obi and his supporters to planned nationwide anarchy.
According to a letter from Obi’s legal team, Alex Ejesieme (SAN) & Co, addressed to Onanuga, the accusations were published on Onanuga’s verified X account on July 20, 2024, and subsequently circulated across various media platforms, including Vanguard News, Punch, The Cable, This Day Live, Tribune Online, Leadership, and Channels TV.
The controversial publication alleges that Obi’s supporters are orchestrating nationwide protests aimed at destabilizing the federal government. The letter categorically denies these claims, describing them as “false and malicious,” and emphasizes that Obi has always encouraged his supporters to uphold the rule of law and express dissatisfaction through constructive criticism rather than violence.
Obi’s legal representatives argue that the statements were made with the intent to ostracize and malign him, causing significant emotional distress. They contend that the publication has not only damaged Obi’s reputation but also prompted a global outcry among his supporters and well-wishers.
The letter demands an immediate retraction of the statements and an unreserved apology within 72 hours of receipt. Furthermore, Obi is seeking N5 billion in damages for the harm caused by the defamatory statements.
Obi, known for his principled stance and advocacy for good governance, is determined to clear his name and hold those responsible for the publication accountable.
