#EndBadGovernance Protesters Demand Accountability as Nigeria Marks 64th Independence Anniversary
Lagos, Nigeria.
As Nigeria celebrates its 64th independence anniversary, protesters under the #EndBadGovernance movement took to the streets of Lagos, voicing their grievances over the continued hardship and economic challenges facing millions of Nigerians.
Chanting slogans and wielding placards, demonstrators condemned the widespread poverty, inflation, fuel price hikes, and high unemployment rate that have exacerbated living conditions across the country. Many participants called for urgent reforms and an end to the suffering imposed by poor governance and corruption.
One protester, who identified himself as Adewale, said, “We are tired of the empty promises. Every Independence Day, we hear the same speeches, but nothing changes. Nigerians are suffering, and we won’t stop until the government listens to us.”
The protest coincided with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations, casting a shadow over what is typically a day of national pride and reflection. Many Nigerians have expressed frustration with the ruling class, accusing them of neglecting the needs of the common citizen.
Meanwhile, security forces monitored the demonstrations closely, and while there were reports of heightened tension, the protest remained largely peaceful.
The #EndBadGovernance movement, which first gained prominence during the #EndSARS protests in 2020, continues to be a powerful force in Nigerian civil society, pushing for systemic change and greater accountability.
As the nation reflects on 64 years of independence, the protesters' message is clear: Nigeria can no longer afford to maintain the status quo.
