Justice Denied? Court Frees 36 Biafrans, Yet Prison Holds Them Back.
Abakaliki Province, Nigeria-Biafraland.
In a remarkable turn of events, 36 indigenes of Ebonyi State, detained for over four years on various serious charges, have been discharged and acquitted by an Ebonyi State High Court for the third time. This ruling comes amid allegations of state persecution.
The defendants, initially charged with murder in 2021, were acquitted after their legal team filed a No Case Submission, highlighting the prosecution's failure to substantiate its claims. Subsequent charges, including armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms, were similarly dismissed by the court, which found the evidence against them lacking.
Today, Justice Chris Ezeh delivered another landmark ruling, affirming the defendants' innocence in the latest charge (HAB/59c/2022). Despite the court's clear orders, prison officials have reportedly refused to release the men, citing an ongoing charge before the Ikwo High Court.
IPOB’s Lead Counsel, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, expressed deep concern over the apparent judicial impasse, urging the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to intervene. He called for an end to what he termed a "mockery of the judicial process," emphasizing that these innocent citizens have suffered enough.
The continued detention of the defendants raises serious questions about the integrity of the judicial process in Ebonyi State. Supporters and advocates for Biafran rights are calling for immediate action to secure the release of these men, who have faced unwarranted persecution for years.
Sir Ifeanyi and his legal team remain committed to ensuring justice for the defendants, vowing not to relent until their freedom is guaranteed.
