Victory for Human Rights: Abass Withdraws Bill Seeking to Criminalize Self-Determination, Protest, and Free Speech.

Abuja, Nigeria.

In a significant response to widespread public concern, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has officially withdrawn the controversial Counter Subversion Bill, which proposed stringent penalties for citizens who refuse to recite the national anthem or pledge.

The bill, which prescribed a 10-year jail term, a fine of N5 million, or both for non-compliance, had sparked considerable debate across the nation. The bill also sought to impose a four-year imprisonment or a fine of N3 million on individuals who profess loyalty to any organization that disregards Nigeria’s sovereignty.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, Speaker Abbas announced the withdrawal of the bill, attributing the decision to the voices and concerns expressed by Nigerians.

"The decision to withdraw the bill follows extensive consultations with a broad range of stakeholders and a careful consideration of the nation’s current circumstances," the statement read.

Earlier, while defending the bill, Abbas emphasized that it was designed to address national security concerns and was not aimed at any specific group or section of the country. However, the bill was met with widespread criticism, with many Nigerians expressing fears that it could infringe on citizens' rights and further polarize the nation.

"Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, a champion of the people’s interests, has always prioritized listening to the citizens and fostering unity. His decision reflects his commitment to ensuring that the House remains truly the People’s House," the statement added.

The withdrawal of the bill marks a significant moment in the ongoing discourse around national unity and the role of legislation in protecting the sovereignty of Nigeria. The Biafra Sun will continue to monitor developments on this issue and provide updates as they unfold.
