American Veterans of Igbo Descent Urge British Prime Minister to Address Nnamdi Kanu's Detention

The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) have reached out to the newly elected British Prime Minister, Rt Hon Keir Starmer, congratulating him on his electoral victory and urging him to intervene in the case of Nnamdi Kanu. The letter, dated July 19, 2024, highlights AVID's concerns regarding the continued detention of Kanu by the Nigerian government.

In their letter, AVID commended Prime Minister Starmer for his forward-thinking stance on British imperialism and its effects on Africa, with a particular emphasis on Nigeria. They expressed confidence in his leadership, citing his broad knowledge of global affairs and his commitment to transformative change.

AVID, a not-for-profit organization comprising U.S. citizens of Igbo descent who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, outlined the plight of Nnamdi Kanu, a British citizen and political activist. Kanu has been detained by the Nigerian Department of State Security Services (DSS) since 2021 following his extraordinary rendition from Nairobi, Kenya. The organization emphasized that Kanu has been held in isolated detention due to his calls for a referendum to establish the Nation of Biafra.

The letter detailed the severe health issues Kanu is facing, noting that he has been denied access to adequate healthcare. AVID highlighted a recent incident where Kanu's request to see his doctor was denied by DSS, despite a letter from his legal counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimako, detailing his deteriorating condition.

AVID called on Prime Minister Starmer to expedite a thorough review of Kanu's case and advocate for his release from the "Nigerian dungeon." They stressed that their appeal is rooted in democratic principles and human rights, urging the British government to address what they describe as cruel and inhumane treatment of Kanu by Nigerian authorities.

The letter was signed by AVID President Dr. Sylvester Onyia and AVID Secretary Dr. Godson Obiagwu, reflecting the organization's commitment to seeking justice for Kanu and other individuals facing similar plights.
